Friday night I headed over to the Key Club in L.A. to see a friends
band play and to give my full support. I ended up leaving with my mind
on another band that just captured my attention on the spot.
It was during a conversation with a friend that Tommy Peacock and the
Gas took stage. The band only consisted of two members, Eric “Hooligan”
Hallinan on the drums and Tommy Peacock on the acoustic guitar. The
energy that they automatically gave out is what caught my entire
attention and distracted me from my conversations. Hallinan and Peacock
were moving at a rate of speed that made me think they had each drank
five Monster drinks within the hour.
It was contagious. Pretty soon I was bobbing my head and tapping my
foot to the beat that the Mohawk bearing Hallinan was setting. As I
look around I noticed that my companions had also found the same beat
to dance to.
A couple of songs into the set I leaned over to a friend and shared how
the duo reminded me of the Violent Femmes.
I received an enthusiastic agreement. Apparently the band overhead my comment because the following song they played was “Blister in the Sun”. The song cover was met with the crowds’ approval as a small mob stood up dancing to the song and cheering.
By the end of the night the duo shared that they were in fact not a duo, but rather a trio. Bass player Kyle “B. Cool” Barton was MIA. I was so impressed by there shorthanded performance that I forked over the five dollars and purchased an album. No regrets have surfaced.
With seven fun energizing songs on the album it has remained in my car to listen to on demand.
As I listen to the catchy rock tunes I am reminded of their stellar performance. If you have a chance to see these guys play, do it! Their next big gig will happen at the Viper room at West Hollywood on August 25th. Even if you decide the music is not for you, I guarantee that you will have a fun head bobbing night.
