Having become accustomed to hearing Rihanna's catchy tunes n the radio I finally broke down and purchased her latest release, Good Girl Gone Bad.
I was expecting one of two things. The album was either going to be
infested with non-stop dance music, or it would end up being another
poor Pop/R&B release with two or three good upbeat songs with the
remainder of the disc being slow, sappy, and typical.
The album begins with the familiar beginning of Umbrella
that makes me want to nod my head in agreement to the beat...the beat
of repetition. Rihanna can't help that her song has been overplayed by
radio stations and fans alike. It's a catchy and agreeable song. I
suppose it's a love/hate relationship. Push Up On Me starts
off like an 80's dance song and ends like an unnerving teeny-bop pop
song, "Let's play a game/I won't be a tease...I wish you would push up
on me/I wish you would push up on me/I wish you would light me up and
say you want me/Push up me."
When Don't Start the Music comes around I can instnatly picture
myself at a club with strobe lights affecting my perception of
reality. No booty dancing here, just body twisting movement that you
can't even imagine until you let your body move to the music. So
distracted my body would be that I could forgive the Michael Jackson
sounding yelps and incoherent rambling.
The following track Breakin' Dishes made me do a double
take to ensure that I was not listening to the latest from Nelly
Furtado. It's a bit sassy and nasally. The sassiness remains, but
thank goodness the nasal sounds disappear. The beat is really
catchy--a song that I would blast in my car driving down CA-I 99 with
my windows rolled down. A song that lets men everywhere know that they
better not piss me off.

Friday night I headed over to the Key Club in L.A. to see a friends
band play and to give my full support. I ended up leaving with my mind
on another band that just captured my attention on the spot.
It was during a conversation with a friend that Tommy Peacock and the
Gas took stage. The band only consisted of two members, Eric “Hooligan”
Hallinan on the drums and Tommy Peacock on the acoustic guitar. The
energy that they automatically gave out is what caught my entire
attention and distracted me from my conversations. Hallinan and Peacock
were moving at a rate of speed that made me think they had each drank
five Monster drinks within the hour.
It was contagious. Pretty soon I was bobbing my head and tapping my
foot to the beat that the Mohawk bearing Hallinan was setting. As I
look around I noticed that my companions had also found the same beat
to dance to.
A couple of songs into the set I leaned over to a friend and shared how
the duo reminded me of the Violent Femmes.

Alright yall, i haven't forgotten about this site and i definitely
haven't stopped blogging. I'm just waiting for the new Turbonegro
album, "Retox" to be released here in America on August 14th. I have
already listened to the album multiple times from their myspace when
they had the album up for preview for a week, but I wont be writing a
review until i get to REALLY study it. So stay tuned around mid-August
for a full review of the entire album. Until then, i may start doing
little quips about the band, its history, its other albums, and how it
has come to be one of the most revolutionary bands of our time.
More to come soon!

I was blessed by this album.
Not
blessed due to its creativeness, it’s unique sense of caring or its
display of incredible talent. Nope. I was blessed because previous to
hear it, I had NEVER heard Mr. J. Medeiros before and now I was going
to be able to listen to his album with fresh, unbiased ears. I was
going to be able to review this record without thinking about how he
may have veered off from previous efforts or how his production team
isn’t what it has been in the past. None of that is going to come into
play. Because to Mr. Medeiros, I was blessed to come in with virgin
ears.
When
I was living down in Los Angeles, I never got to hear Medeiros’ group,
“The Procussions” and outside of that, I haven’t found any reason why
my ears would have stumbled across him or his talent. Once this record
drops, I’m pretty sure all of that is going to change...
