Recently, i had the benefit of getting a copy of Brandi Carlile’s new live EP for itunes. Though its only four songs, it has to be one of the best live EP’s i have ever listened to. The sound quality is superb and her vocals shine through on every track.
First on the EP is Have You Ever. It is a great tune, and with a slight Mr Cash hum at the beginning, she begins the album showing her vocal range. What Can I Say is also a beautiful tine, and gets more into her known “crooning” style. The Story, which I’m sure you’ve heard on GM commercials, is way better than the snippets you have heard on the TV.
All of the above tunes also showcase her bands ability to lay down a great off tempo beat that is so familiar to a swing style country folk. The last song to me though is the most impressive, by the band especially. The 4 song EP ends with a cover of “Folsom Prison Blues”, and while some may argue that a female rough vocal doesn’t do the song justice, i find it an interesting take. However, the band does a phenomenal job of laying down that rolling beat that reminds us of the train that Mr. Cash spoke of. In essence, the EP is totally worth it, and if a full fledged album was to follow, i would be all over it. Keep up the amazing work Brandi!
