Lily Allen. Does that name sound familiar? No?! I am still at awe
that more people haven’t heard of Lily Allen–especially after she’s
collaborated with such artists as Common. While "Alright, Still" has
been out for a while already, this album is great.
Singer/songwriter Allen demonstrates a healthy sense of humor on her
debut album. Allen doesn’t just deliver humor, but sarcasm, and a
sassy "kick butt" attitude.
Allen thrives with her humor on such songs as Knock ‘Em Out, Everything’s Just Wonderful–my favorite line is "…I wanna be able to eat spaghetti Bolognese/And not feel bad about it for days and days…" and Alfie (think of the group of potheads in movie Knocked Up).
A dose of sassiness can be found with Not Big (oh yea, she goes there).
And that "kick butt" attitude? Listen for it in songs Smile, Friday Night (bar fight!), and LDN.
The only song that seems a little out of place–perhaps because it’s a bit more emotionally serious than expected–is Littlest Things. This song is a reflection on a former relationship that was so sweet, one forgets why things didn’t work out.
As a bonus track, there is a remix of Smile done by Mark Ronson. It’s nothing too exciting, it just moves a bit faster than the original version.
Overall, the album is just a feel good time. The ska and reggae influenced beats allow for much dancing and getting to that happy place of putting your worries aside.
The album may not move you in any deep intense way, but it sure will chase away the blues.
