Iron & Wine: “The Shepherd’s Dog”

On the third full length release, Sam Beam–or as many know him as Iron
and Wine (yes, a solo artist) brings music filled with the sound of
acoustic guitar, djembe, bango and other sounds of a tripped out
experience.  Beam steps up the sound of his folk rock with more rhythm
and the inclusion of other instruments.  The sound to "The Shepherd’s
Dog" is more complete than former releases.  His songs are filled with
wistful stories.

While being a sucker for all the songs on this album there are certain ones that need to be highlighted.  Pagan Angel and a Borrowed Car is the first song on the album that clues the listener in on the depth and variety of the album.  The mood of White Tooth Man gives the listener the impression that they are taking part in some tribal ritual.  House By the Sea
provides an Australian feel with a didjeridu while at the same time
giving the sensation that one is being transported to another time.  Boy With a Coin
is simple yet effective using the steady sound of the acoustic guitar,
clapping, drum beat with a hint of slide guitar that makes this song a
winner.  Finally, The Devil Never Sleeps uses piano as its primary instrument to give it the unique jazzy sound for the album.

But the true gem of this album is Beam’s voice.  It’s soothing angelic
sound moves the listener.  The singer-songwriter brings his songs to
life…so much so that it would be very difficult to find someone to
cover his songs appropriately.
