Rockworms Review: Bright Eyes-Cassadaga

Conor OberstWhen I was put on the assignment of the new Bright Eyes album, it took some time. The new album, Cassadaga (Saddle Creek), uses all the time you can put upon a disk, and its a roller coaster every minute in between. Conor Oberst has done a interesting job of mixing the usual multi faceted layering of musical sounds with some great harmony vocals.
The Album moves in and out of soft lullaby music with occasional attempts towards rock. This, in my opinion, should be the last thing on Conner’s mind, as soft alternative is his specialty. He does allow for tastes of down home country in “Four Winds” and “I Must Belong”. These are good, but not the finest of the album. “Classic Cars” is slow, but succeeds in bringing you back to better days, not lulling you to sleep. “Make A Plan To Love Me” Is a fantastic slow waltz, and “If The Brakeman Turns My Way” is by far the crown of the album. It is perfectly formed and practically beggs to be put as the end credit music of Grey’s Anatomy or a CSI. Overall, if you like Bright Eyes, he keeps delivering. If you wanna rock…go home.
