The Majestic Twelve

"I’ve listened to all of your nonsense, I’ve tried to make sense of it

It’s left me broke and bleeding, slow burning American Rage"

        - The Majestic Twelve
Starflower
Well, I am angry. In fact, I wish I could scream from the rooftops, "If you make politically charged music, you need not have an amazing amount of talent." I like politically charged music, but I also stand behind the idea that musicality is essential.

The Majestic Twelve come at you strong with their political
agendas. They are fearless in who they target, from Condoleezza, to
gays in America, to political correctness - or lack there of. It is
clear their music is obviously their vehicle, but when did they forget
that gimmick doesn’t always equal genius. When did they forget about
the musicality? Don’t get me wrong, I am the first to admit, that
sometimes, the music is too smart. Maybe their message and their
compositions are so far ahead of what I think equates to good music,
that I am missing the giant flashing sign telling me this is amazing
and original. Maybe it is their live show that has gotten them their
acclaim. Maybe I just don’t get it. Truthfully, I am ok with that.

However, with all the bad I have to say about this band, there is some
good to go along with it. More bands need to have something important
to say. Their lyrics are interesting and intriguing. Their lyrics
challenge typical American ideologies and the true brilliance of this
band comes from using poignant sarcasm to exploit our weaknesses. They
even have a few catchy riffs and melodic lines scattered about that
keep the listener hoping for more.

I do know this. With a
little work, you, the Majestic Twelve, will have them all calling.
Internet radio stations, blogs, indie terrestrial radio stations,
college radio stations, and hipster-cool magazines all ready to throw
words around like "refreshing," "original," "hostile," and "aggressive"
to describe your sound. Some of the best music ever made can be
described as such. Just don’t lose your voice because you sacrificed
your music.
